The Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award was created to honor the life and work of Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer and IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner Anja Niedringhaus (1965-2014). The IWMF celebrates the courageous work of women photojournalists who inspire us to take action and better understand the world. Recipients of the award receive a cash prize and have their work showcased during an award ceremony. The award is open to full-time journalists of any nationality.
One winner will receive a $20,000 cash prize and have their work showcased during an award ceremony.
Open to women, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming journalists who are working as full-time journalists as their primary profession. Submissions must include 12 photographs, 6 of which must have been taken within the past two years (2024-2026). Submissions must be in English and cannot include videos, art photography, or illustrations.

Each application must include candidate information, work samples consisting of 12 photographs (minimum 1500px, 72 dpi, JPG format), and a candidate/nomination statement of up to 500 words in English answering four specific questions regarding the journalist's work conditions and storytelling.
