2026 {Re}HAPPENING Call for Proposals

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

-$1 Application Fee

About the Open Call

The {Re}HAPPENING is a day-long event (3pm – 10pm) inspired by John Cage and David Tudor’s 1952 Theatre Piece No. 1. It serves as a platform for contemporary artists to share their response to the vital legacy of Black Mountain College by returning to its original site. We seek proposals for experimental, multi-disciplinary, time-based projects (durational or scheduled), especially those with a strong visual installation component. The event is part art event, part fundraiser, and part community instigator.

What is Offered

BMCM+AC will offer a modest project stipend of $500 to each accepted project.

Requirements

Artists must submit a one-page LOI as a PDF or Doc, include visual/audio work samples, and adhere to a leave-no-trace installation policy. Selected artists are expected to be on-site for installation, the event, and de-installation (April 24-26, 2026). Artists are responsible for their own lodging and transportation.

How to Apply

Submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) no longer than one page via the provided Google Form. The LOI should describe the project, its multi-sensory impact, conceptual resonances with BMC, and logistical details. Attach visual or audio documentation as part of the submission.
