Sophia Kosmaoglou
Studio practice and critical studies course that integrates practice and theory in a comprehensive programme of lectures, seminars, workshops, off-site visits, tutorials, assignments, feedback and peer support. The curriculum fosters experimentation and collaborative study in a community of peers. It provides a supportive environment where participants will extend their knowledge of critical theories and discourses, develop their ability to discuss, write about and judge contemporary art, and contextualise their own practice. The Critical Studies component offers a solid foundation in essential histories and discourses of contemporary art, demystifying the art world and providing multiple entry points into critical theory. The Studio Practice component consists of regular group tutorials and workshops on creative practice, research and writing, offering tools, references and feedback to help you develop and articulate your practice. The course is delivered online with hybrid off-site visits and facilitated via Canvas and Zoom.
The course offers a comprehensive programme of lectures, seminars, workshops, off-site visits, tutorials, assignments, feedback, and peer support. Participants gain a sound grasp of contemporary art history and debates, improve critical discussion and evaluation skills, learn to articulate and contextualise their practice, and develop writing skills for critical reviews, artist statements, or proposals. It also provides a toolbox of methodologies for continuing practice and confidence for independent pursuit.
Participants need a reliable internet connection, a computer with webcam, mic, and speakers/headphones, access to Canvas and Zoom, notebook and pen, and examples of their work. They are expected to develop a project, commit to the course, participate actively, support peers, and have an interest in alternative art education. Money for optional travel and exhibition entry may also be needed for off-site visits.
