About the Open Call

The "black/white" open call by A Smith Gallery seeks photographic works exploring the theme of black and white. Michael Kirchoff will serve as the juror. Submissions should be digital images, 1800 pixels on the longest side, 72 ppi JPEG, labeled consecutively with name (e.g., 1FirstName_LastName.jpg) corresponding to the application form. Do not watermark images. An application fee of $40 for the first 5 images and $5 per additional image applies. Photographers submitting 13 or more images receive a complimentary review by gallery directors. The competition is open to all professional and amateur photographers, internationally, working in all photographic mediums and styles. Previously exhibited work in an A Smith Gallery competition and AI-generated images (due to copyright concerns) are not eligible. Selected artists will have their images featured on Facebook and Instagram, discussed in a GalleryTalk (posted on the blog), listed for sale on the gallery's online store (30% gallery commission), and included in an exhibition catalogue. 27 images will be selected for "The 27" hardbound fine art book. Awards include a Juror's Award (online solo exhibition, "The 27" book, blog feature), Director's Award ("The 27" book, blog feature), and Visitors Award ($100 for most Instagram likes). The jurying process is blind. Photographers retain full rights to their images; the gallery uses images for publicity, online gallery, store, and publications.

What is Offered

Selected artists receive: featured images on Facebook and Instagram, discussion in a GalleryTalk (posted on the blog), sales opportunities via the online store (30% gallery commission), inclusion in an exhibition catalogue, and permanent archiving of the online exhibition and GalleryTalk. Juror and Director Award recipients also receive 'The 27' hardbound exhibition book. The Juror's Award includes an online solo exhibition and a feature story on the gallery blog. The Directors Award includes a feature story on the gallery blog. The Visitors Award (most Instagram likes) grants $100.

Requirements

Open to all photographers, professional and amateur, working in all photographic mediums and styles. International entries are welcomed. Work that has been previously exhibited in an A Smith Gallery competition is not eligible. Images created with Artificial Intelligence are preferred not to be accepted due to copyright concerns. Digital images must be 1800 pixels on the longest side, saved in JPEG format at 72 ppi. Each image should be labeled with consecutive numbers followed by your name (e.g., 1FirstName_LastName.jpg), corresponding with the number on the application form. Do not watermark images.

How to Apply

Fill out the online application available at https://asmithgallery.com/application/, send images, and make payment with Paypal. An email confirmation will be sent upon receiving the submission and payment. Alternatively, fill and submit the online application, print out the confirmation email, and mail it with a check for fees payable to "A Smith Gallery" to P O Box 175, Johnson City, TX 78636.
