Kolaj Institute
Kolaj Institute invites photographers and collage artists to participate in a month-long virtual artist residency in September 2025. This program will explore the intersection of photography and collage, guided by questions such as: What happens when a collagist picks up the camera? What happens when a photographer collages their pictures? Artists will engage in dialogue, learn from one another through presentations on collage theory, artist practice, the art ecosystem, and the history of photography and collage. Participants will create artwork by shooting with their own camera (film & develop or digital & print) and then making collage with their photographs. The residency culminates in an exhibition of the created artwork at Kolaj Institute’s Gallery in December 2025, held as part of PhotoNOLA 2025, an annual celebration of photography in New Orleans. The residency is led by Dafna Steinberg and Lance Rothstein, and curated by Ric Kasini Kadour in partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance.
Opportunity to make artwork for and participate in a series of exhibitions, with a culminating exhibition at Kolaj Institute’s Gallery during PhotoNOLA 2025. Grants are available to offset the cost of the residency for those in need.
The residency is intended for artists with an existing practice in collage and/or photography who wish to explore the intersections of these two mediums. Applicants must be over the age of 21 and can be from anywhere in the world. Artists are expected to attend all scheduled virtual sessions (Mondays, 7-9PM EDT, from September 8-29, 2025) and complete assignments.
