Prince Claus Fund
The Cultural & Artistic Responses to the Environmental Crisis (CAREC) programme is a process-based initiative fostering critical thinking, care, empowerment, and collective imagination. It gathers nine mid-career creatives, supported by three Senior Fellows, for a nine-month collaborative journey. The program investigates contextual dynamics between aesthetic responses and politics, the role of technologies, and emphasizes ethical frameworks, community involvement, material sourcing, and knowledge systems. It critically reflects on artists' responsibilities, advocating for cooperation, accountability, and mutual respect over extractivist practices. The program combines online interactive formats like peer group and guest speaker sessions with an in-person 'Lab Week'. Participants dedicate an average of 20 hours per month and should be comfortable sharing ideas in spoken English. It prioritizes curiosity, motivation, and themes over fixed deliverables.
Each participant receives an Award of €10,000 and dedicated guidance from the Senior Fellows to further develop the concept for a body of work initially outlined in their application.
Individual, mid-career artists and cultural practitioners who are from, live, and work in eligible countries. Applicants must have approximately 7-15 years of relevant professional experience, counting from the start of professional artistic practice to the application date. Professionals without a personal artistic practice, such as arts managers, facilitators, or academic researchers, are not eligible. Applicants must be able to communicate in English.
