Conditions
Conditions is an artist-run, low-cost studio and online programme designed for artists seeking to develop their work through critical conversations, interdisciplinary collaboration, and collective practice. Co-founded in 2018 by Matthew Noel–Tod and David Panos, the initiative aims to provide an alternative model to the increasing costs of studio space and art education in London. The Studio Programme (9 months, Feb - Oct) offers individual workspace at Conditions in Croydon, UK, along with group and individual critiques, artist talks, and workshops. It includes structured group projects such as film, music, digital technology, and exhibition projects. Studios are open 24/7, and participants are expected to reside within a reasonable travelling distance of Croydon. The Online Programme (12 months, Nov - Oct) is a mentor-led program for artists worldwide. It features 7 x 1:1 meetings and 2 x group meetings over the year, supplemented by online artist talks, workshops, and other conversations. Participants indicate preferences for specific Conditions Online Programme Associates (mentors). Additionally, Conditions houses a Digital Lab, supporting artists experimenting with emerging 3D and digital technologies, including an affordable 3D printing service and practical skills workshops in 3D printing, 3D modelling, Unity, VR, and Arduino/electronics. The programme fosters dialogue, encounters, collective discussion, and solidarity among artists, valuing interdisciplinary work and actively seeking a critical mindset open to debates around representation in art.
