About the Open Call

CTR_matrix is a five-week advanced course led by João Fiadeiro and guest artists, dedicated to research and experimentation with Composition in Real Time [CTR]. This field of study integrates performance, improvisation, and creation, seeking to reduce the distinction between theory and practice, the fictional and the documentary, and observation and action. The course's ultimate goal is the collective experience of 'not knowing together'. Participants will appropriate CTR tools and concepts through exercises, performative devices, and sharing visual references like diagrams, videos of past practices, and works by artists who engage with this practice. The first week (September 28 - October 5, 2025) will take place at Herdade do Freixo do Meio, a Mediterranean ecosystem near Lisbon. Mornings will feature AI (Artisanal Intelligence) sessions with estate employees (e.g., prehistoric archaeology, syntropic agroforestry), afternoons will focus on RTC matrix studies, and evenings will include film screenings and discussions. Meals will be provided (lunch by Herdade, dinner prepared by participants). The subsequent four weeks (October 6 - October 31, 2025) will be held at Forum Dança facilities in Lisbon. Mornings will continue CTR matrix study, and afternoons will explore synthesis and performance devices. Informal process presentations will conclude each week (October 10, 17, 24, 31). The program includes a conference-performance 'I Was Here' by João Fiadeiro on September 28.

What is Offered

An advanced, immersive five-week course in Composition in Real Time (CTR), encompassing theoretical study, practical experimentation, performative devices, and peer feedback sessions led by João Fiadeiro and occasional guests. Includes a week-long stay at Herdade do Freixo do Meio with Artisanal Intelligence sessions, provided lunches, and evening film screenings. The program culminates in informal process presentations at Forum Dança. Participants will gain access to CTR tools and concepts.

Requirements

This workshop is aimed at artists with experience in improvisation but is open to anyone who identifies with the premise of the proposal and feels available and comfortable experimenting with composition and improvisation practices with the body. Participants should be aware that the practice may involve situations that challenge comfort zones due to the intense, vulnerable, and emotionally charged nature of improvisation and performance.

How to Apply

Applications must be written in English or Portuguese and include: a motivation letter (max. 1 A4 .pdf page), a CV with photo and biographical note, and a portfolio in PDF format and/or website with a history of creations, published texts, or collaborations. Links to videos must provide direct access to online viewing (Youtube, Vimeo, etc.). Applications closed on July 13th 2025. Selection involved online chats during the week of June 23, 2025, with results by the end of July 2025. All fields on the application form are mandatory.
