Banff Centre
This three-week self-directed residency at Banff Centre offers a flexible format, allowing participants to choose the amount of programming and support they desire. Optional elements include thematic talks from specialist faculty and guests, one-on-one mentoring sessions to discuss ideas and obstacles across genres, Q&A sessions, workshops to explore writing techniques, and public reading opportunities. Participants are provided with individual accommodation and a small private studio to focus on their writing practice away from everyday constraints.
The program offers individual accommodation, a private studio, flexible meal plans (credit-based system), opportunities to showcase work-in-progress, group seminars/workshops with faculty, access to the Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives, and free access to the Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation Centre (swimming pool, climbing gym, fitness equipment). Participants also receive box office discounts for ticketed performances. Scholarships are available, covering 100% of tuition fees and a portion of accommodation and meal costs (50% for standard, 100% for Canadian Indigenous applicants).
The program is designed for emerging and established writers with a proven publication record seeking dedicated time to work on a specific project or create new works. Participants should be comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. All creative genres are welcome. Applicants must be 18 years or older. The program is run entirely in English, and only projects written in English are accepted. Domestic and international applications are welcome; international participants are responsible for obtaining a Visitor Visa as programs do not meet Canadian Student Visa requirements.
To apply, complete the online form, pay the application fee ($65 for individuals, $35 for Indigenous applicants), and upload your materials via SlideRoom. Required materials include a one to two-page resume or C.V. detailing publication history and relevant experience, a one-page cover letter explaining interest and goals, a one-page description of the proposed work-in-progress, and a portfolio excerpt (maximum 10 pages) from the intended work. Applicants should also complete the Financial Aid section to be eligible for scholarships.
