Der Greif
Der Greif has invited Hank Willis Thomas, supported by Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung, to guest-edit Issue 18. The theme for the open call is 'Tomorrow is Today.' This call asks artists, image makers, and visual storytellers to respond to the fierce urgency of now, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s final published words: 'Can we live the future we hope for – today?' Hank Willis Thomas is a Brooklyn-based conceptual artist known for interrogating how mass media, advertising, and popular culture construct understandings of race, identity, and history through photography, sculpture, installation, and public works. This open call encourages meditations on King's quote from 'Where Do We Go From Here? Chaos or Community' (1967), prompting participants to imagine a tomorrow rooted in today and to live as if the future is already here, with love having the last word.
Selected artists will have their work seen by renowned artist Hank Willis Thomas, get the chance to be published in Issue 18, receive a free copy plus additional copies at a highly discounted rate, participate in related events during Paris Photo 2025 and beyond, and may get the chance to publish an Artist Feature on dergreif.org, a highly-frequented international source of photographic art.
The open call invites image makers, visual storytellers, and artists to respond to the theme. No specific age, nationality, or experience level is explicitly stated beyond being 'artists,' 'image makers,' and 'photographers.'
Submissions are hosted by Picter.com. While a voluntary 13€ donation is suggested to support Der Greif's non-profit mission, it is not mandatory. Artists unable to contribute financially can email voucher-print@dergreif.org to receive a 50% or 100% discount code for submission.
