About the Open Call

The Royal Drawing School offers artists' residencies at Dumfries House, Scotland, emphasizing working from observation and new work development. The program is open to painters, textile and furniture designers, illustrators, practice-based researchers, and printmakers. Residents receive private studios and self-catering accommodation on the 2,000-acre estate, which features 18th-century Chippendale furniture, Flemish and Scottish paintings, and extensive gardens. Studios are located in a renovated laundry building, with some ground-floor options suitable for sculptors. A new printmaking studio with etching facilities is available for proficient printmakers. The residency is typically two weeks long. Applications are welcomed from Royal Drawing School alumni (including Online Drawing Development Year graduates), Scottish artists (living/working in Scotland or studied there), and artists nominated by partner art schools in the United States. Special parent and child residencies for alumni parents (1-2 weeks, apply as a group of 2-4) are also offered.

Requirements

Open to Royal Drawing School alumni, graduates of the Online Drawing Development Year, Scottish artists (currently living/working in Scotland or studied at a Scottish art school), and artists nominated by partner art schools in the United States. Drawing must be part of their practice. Printmaking residencies require proficiency in printmaking. Alumni parent artists can apply as a group of 2-4 for parent and child residencies (Drawing Year Alumni only for this specific type).
