About the Open Call

Manifest Gallery's 22nd Season presents 'ECHO,' a call for works exploring repetition or duplication as a formal approach or underlying concept. Repetition, whether audible or visual, creates patterns that lead to rhythm and continuity, establishing a sense of movement. Breaking these patterns subverts continuity. Repetition also fosters comparison, highlighting differences through doubles and doppelgängers, and allows for re-addressing familiar subjects with new knowledge. Furthermore, repetition builds mastery, erodes landscapes, and facilitates dissemination through multiples and copies. The exhibition is open to all artists internationally, with no limitations other than entries must be original works addressing this broad theme. All traditional and non-traditional genre and media are accepted. There are no size restrictions other than what can physically fit in the gallery spaces, and no timeframe requirements for when works must have been made. The selection process involves a two-part jury system by professional and academic advisors, with final selections made by the exhibit curator. Accepted works will be documented in a high-quality hard-cover annual publication (MEA) for the season. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs to and from the gallery, and works must arrive ready to install with professional-level presentation and craftsmanship. Works are insured while on gallery premises against theft, vandalism, and damage by patrons/staff, but not during shipping or due to inherent material/craftsmanship failure. Artworks are not required to be for sale; if sold, Manifest Gallery retains a 30% commission.

What is Offered

Each participating exhibitor will receive a $50 cash honorarium. Additionally, $9,000 in Grand Jury Awards will be distributed, with $1,000 awarded to one work during each of the nine exhibition periods in the 22nd season. Exhibiting artists have the option to purchase one copy of the season's annual publication (MEA) at half price, or pre-order it at 40% off. Supporting donors at an eligible level receive a free MEA, and solo exhibitors receive a copy for free.

Requirements

Entries must represent original works addressing the broad theme of repetition or duplication. Works must be suitable for physical exhibition at Manifest Gallery, adhering to its size constraints and capable of fitting through the doors. All submitted digital images must be high-quality JPEGs, at least 1000 pixels in any direction and 72 dpi, with specific file naming conventions (lastname_firstname_entrynumber.jpg). Video entries require online viewing links without login/password, and a representative JPEG. Accepted work must arrive gallery-ready, exhibiting good craftsmanship and professional presentation, without significant deviation from submitted images. Artists must agree to make their work available for the duration of the exhibition and not double-book or sell it after submission.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete the online entry form provided on the Manifest Gallery website. An entry fee of $45 covers up to three entries, with an additional $5 for each subsequent entry. Fees can be paid by U.S. check, money order, or credit card via PayPal. Digital images (JPEG, min 1000 pixels in any direction, 72 dpi) must be uploaded to a project Dropbox link provided after entry form submission. File names must follow the format: lastname_firstname_entrynumber.jpg (e.g., Jones_Mike_1.jpg). Detail images should include '_detail' in the filename. Video or interactive submissions require a link to a viewable online copy (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox) that does not require login or password, in addition to a single representative JPEG image.
