About the Open Call

The Sustainable Darkroom Futures Residency is a hybrid online programme culminating in an in-person exhibition and symposium in partnership with the Northern Centre of Photography and the Photography Research Group at the University of Sunderland. Supported by Arts Council England and The Grocers' Charity, this call seeks five individuals to propose research projects for innovative, sustainable systems in photography, covering areas like darkrooms, lab practices, legal frameworks, and digital technology. The residency provides a grant, bi-weekly seminars, mentorship, and access to facilities for testing prototypes. Final outputs include participation in the exhibition, a written report for an online book, and engagement in various online sessions.

What is Offered

Six-month hybrid residency, £3,400 grant, bi-weekly seminars, mentorship, access to University of Sunderland facilities, participation in exhibition and symposium (with travel/accommodation stipend), and inclusion in online publication.

Requirements

Open to UK residents only. Applicants must propose research on innovative, sustainable systems in photography. Selected residents must participate in all online seminars, mid-point presentations, and physical exhibition/symposium in Sunderland in October 2027.
