About the Open Call

The Studios at MASS MoCA artist and writers residency program is located in North Adams, Massachusetts, offering an immersive experience within one of the world’s leading contemporary art centers. The residency invites 10 artists at a time for 2 or 4-week sessions between July and December 2026. Residents receive: private, furnished studio space at MASS MoCA available 24/7; housing (private bedroom/queen bed, shared kitchen and bath) directly across from the museum; one communal meal per day with fellow artists; a studio visit with a MASS MoCA curator or guest curator; optional opportunities to share work through Open Studios or presentations; 1-year priority access to Assets for Artists Career Development Workshops; and 3 months of MASS MoCA member benefits, including free access to the museum’s galleries and discounts on events, plus free access to the nearby Clark Art Institute. The already subsidized residency fee is $650/week, with full-ride fellowships and need-based financial aid available to reduce costs. Applicants can opt to be considered for these funding opportunities. The application process is only for English responses, with a separate link provided for Spanish applications.

What is Offered

Private, furnished studio space (24/7 access), housing (private bedroom/queen bed, shared kitchen and bath), one communal meal per day, a studio visit with a MASS MoCA curator or guest curator, opportunities for open studios/presentations, 1-year priority access to Assets for Artists Career Development Workshops, 3 months of MASS MoCA member benefits (free museum access, discounts), and free access to the Clark Art Institute.

Requirements

The program welcomes applications from artists at all career stages, income levels, and geographic locations. Primarily seeking visual artists (painters, sculptors, installation artists, photographers, video/new media artists, fiber artists, printmakers) and writers in all literary disciplines. Dancers, musicians, and other performers are discouraged due to studios being suited for quiet work (not sound-proofed and lacking rehearsal/movement space). Studios have light-duty ventilation, so practices generating strong fumes cannot be accommodated. Groups/collectives may apply to work on joint visual and literary arts projects.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted online via the Submittable platform. Applicants should visit the Studios at MASS MoCA website (www.massmoca.org/studios) for full program details and to access the general application form for July – December 2026 residency sessions.
