FAVELAB
The Greek Embroidery Residency program offers an intensive exploration into Greek embroidery, a distinctive style reflecting cultural background and world views of Eastern Mediterranean civilizations. Participants will discover patterns, ideogrammatic motifs, pictorial and tridimensional techniques, and their social and spiritual values. The program covers 6,000 years of textile history through collection visits and lectures, explaining the visual traditions that form the alphabet of Greek embroidery. It teaches antique embroidery techniques and how to design and stitch vibrant motifs on textile. The residency also explores experimental art, conceptual, and social bonding uses of Greek embroidery, motivating participants to create their own embroideries for presentation at an Athens downtown venue, with their work documented in a catalogue. The program includes accommodation in downtown Athens and is available for individual artists seeking a customized approach or small groups of up to four.
Accommodation in central Athens, workshops, lectures, museum visits, opportunity to exhibit work, documentation in a catalogue.
Open to artists, designers, crafters, art theorists, journalists, amateur embroiderers, or embroidery lovers. Participants must be willing to pay the program fee.
