【OPEN CALL】Artist In Residence Program 2026 Visual Arts

About the Open Call

KYOTO ART CENTER offers an artist-in-residence program to support the creative activities of emerging artists and researchers in the field of arts who seek to create new artistic expression through exposure to different cultures. This year, open calls will be accepted from artists or researchers working in the field of visual arts. The period of stay is within 3 months between April 1, 2026 (Wed) and March 31, 2027 (Wed). Food, artist fees, and other living expenses will not be provided. Participants are required to prepare their own supplies for production, research, and other activities. A report must be submitted after the completion of the residency. Participants are responsible for their own safety during their stay and travel insurance is highly recommended.

What is Offered

Provide an accommodation during the period of stay (up to 3 months in principle). Provide a studio at KYOTO ART CENTER. Round-trip airfare (Economy class) from residential area to Kansai International Airport or Osaka International Airport. Subsidy of 200,000 yen (tax included) per production (for both individuals and groups). Cooperation in public relations. Assistance by art coordinators.

Requirements

An emerging artist or researcher active in the field of visual arts who has a clear reason for staying in Kyoto for production, research, etc. (Literature and cross-genre applicants are eligible to apply every year). Participants must be able to plan and implement exchange projects with the public during their participation period. Capable of communicating in English or Japanese.

How to Apply

1) Fill out the application sheet in English or Japanese (Word or PDF available for download). 2) Fill out the online application form from the provided Google Forms link, attach the completed application sheet (named with your name, e.g., File_YourName.pdf) in the designated area. Do not attach images or video files directly to the form, but provide URLs in the application sheet. Attach your portfolio at the end of the application form (named with your name, e.g., Portfolio_YourName.pdf). Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Applications must be completed by August 31, 2025, 23:59 (JST).
