Danish Arts Foundation
The Danish Arts Foundation's program aims to promote performing arts of high artistic quality in Denmark and Danish produced performing arts abroad by supporting internationalization. This includes international guest performances, touring, site-specific performances, networking and research for long-term collaborations, co-productions, participation in workshops abroad, and international residencies. The committee evaluates applications based on artistic quality, emphasizing courage, innovative forms, clear artistic ideas, societal relevance, and reflections on audience experience. Collaborations, project longevity through touring and reruns, and effective dissemination are also valued. Specifically for international activities, emphasis is placed on multiple performances, related activities (networking, workshops), verified mutual interest, and exchange of experience with the Danish performing arts scene. The committee encourages applicants to incorporate social and climate-related sustainability in their project descriptions. Applicants will receive the committee’s decision via the Grant Portal within 12 weeks after the application deadline. All awarded grants are published on the website once applicants have received decisions. Decisions are made in accordance with section 3(1), cf. (2) and (3) of the Danish Act on the Danish Arts Foundation’s Activities (Act no. 458 of 8 May 2013). Recipients are legally required to report on their project to the Agency for Culture and Palaces, with reporting requirements depending on the grant amount.
Grants of up to DKK 75,000.
Eligible applicants include smaller theatres, performing arts groups, independent performing artists, and operators organizing or working with performing arts activities. Support is not granted for projects carried out exclusively by large institutional theatres (The Royal Danish Theatre, Danish regional theatres, Jutland Opera, and Copenhagen theatre association). Funding is not available for activities initiated ahead of the deadline or for educational purposes for individuals. Applicants must have a NemKonto for Danish citizens/organizations, or provide a completed bank information form for foreign bank accounts if a grant is awarded. The application must address artistic quality, courage, a clear artistic idea, societal relevance, audience's experience, collaborations (preferably co-productions with the independent performing arts scene), project longevity (through national/international touring or reruns), and effective dissemination. Specific goals for the project, such as touring numbers, audience figures, new contacts, or related activities, should be stated.
Applications must be submitted using the Grant Portal. Applicants without a Danish MitID must order a dedicated login. It is recommended to use Chrome or Firefox browsers. The application form requires a short project description (max 2400 characters) detailing the primary idea, artistic vision, genre choice, and project period. Mandatory attachments include a budget (using the provided Excel template), participants’ CVs (max. one page per person), documentation of agreement with international partners or an invitation, and a bank information form for foreign bank accounts (IBAN or non-IBAN). Applicants may also attach a document with up to 3 links to relevant information. Total attachments must not exceed 25 MB and must be in PDF, Word, or Excel format (ZIP files are not accepted). Submitted applications can be edited and resubmitted before the deadline; the most recently submitted version will be processed. All communication regarding the application takes place within the Grant Portal.
