Radical Film School
Radical Film School (formerly South London Gallery Film School) has operated since 2015, cultivating a network of over 100 participants. The program champions independent, unconventional work that is radical in both form and content, integrating film education, creative development, and social/political engagement. It aims to develop filmmaking that challenges exploitation, inequality, genocide, and imperialism, while imagining an equitable world. Designed to be non-hierarchical and student-led, the free program covers transportation and lunch costs for participants. It consists of five consecutive Saturday sessions, supplemented by additional workshops, masterclasses, and informal meetings throughout the year to encourage sustained creative networks. The curriculum encompasses Artistic Practice, Political Development, Guest Sessions with inspiring filmmakers, Project Development, and Practical Skills, all aimed at developing a unique artistic voice and building a supportive group of life-long collaborators.
A free filmmaking program offering intensive film education, creative development, social and political engagement, guest sessions with leading filmmakers, project development support, and practical skills training. Transportation and lunch costs are covered for all participants. The program fosters networking, collaboration, and provides opportunities for exhibition and professional advancement, including pathways to BFI-funded films and prestigious residencies.
Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old and available to attend all five in-person sessions in London. They should be in the early stages of their filmmaking careers (having made no more than one feature-length film) and dedicated to becoming directors. No prior film experience is required, but a passion for experimental, arthouse, abstract, politically and formally radical filmmaking is essential. Applicants must be willing to collaborate and share ideas in a caring, supportive, and honest environment. The program cannot support visa applications, UK travel costs, or accommodation for international applicants. While preference is given to individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in the film industry (based on race, sex, gender identity, class, and ability), all eligible artists are encouraged to apply.
