About the Open Call

Urban Bodies examines migration not simply as movement across borders but as a lived urban condition shaped by displacement, housing, labour, cultural diversity, and changing ideas of belonging. The residency encourages artists to investigate how creative practice can reveal and transform the relationships between people, place, and public space. Working alongside local communities, migrant groups, young people, and civic organisations, participants will engage in collaborative artistic processes that generate new narratives around mobility and coexistence. The programme unfolds through four stages: territorial research, community engagement, co-creation, artistic production, and public restitution. Rather than representing migration from the outside, the residency emphasises ethical collaboration, shared authorship, and socially engaged artistic practice. Residents will receive accommodation, subsistence, travel support, local transportation, access to workspaces and equipment, weekly training sessions, and networking opportunities with cultural, design, and fashion professionals. The residency does not include an artist fee.

Requirements

Applicants must: Be artists, cultural practitioners, designers, or researchers with an interest in migration, multicultural contexts, urban transformation, and community-based practice. Be European nationals with legal residency in an EU Member State (including Overseas Countries and Territories). Submit: CV Portfolio Short proposal or area of inquiry (maximum 4,000 characters) describing the questions or methods they wish to explore during the residency. The residency particularly welcomes practitioners working in: Performance, theatre, dance, movement, sound, or embodied practices Visual arts, photography, video, installation, public art, or image-based research Material design, spatial practice, ecological design, craft, or socially engaged design Sociology, urban studies, participatory research, or socially engaged artistic research Applicants with experience in community engagement, interdisciplinary practice, and Italian language skills are encouraged to apply. Projects are expected to follow an ethical, non-extractive approach when working with communities.
