Submission Guidelines for Burningword Literary Journal

About the Open Call

Burningword Literary Journal accepts poetry, flash fiction, flash nonfiction, photography, and digital art submissions for publication. Please read through the brief guidelines and publishing schedule before you submit. Poetry submissions may contain up to three (3) poems, submitted as one file, fewer than 6 pages in length, and must be unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are welcomed. Flash fiction and Flash nonfiction submissions should aim for a word count of 300-500 words or less per piece, with up to two (2) pieces per issue, submitted as one file, fewer than five pages in length, and must be unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are welcomed. Photography & digital art (open call) seeks original photography or 2D digital art. Submissions may include up to three (3) image files, each in JPG format with a resolution of 1,850 pixels on the longest side and no larger than 7MB. Previously published work is accepted. This journal employs a double-anonymous review process. Authors must remove all instances of their name from their work before uploading it. Author's name (or pen name), contact information, and third-person bio should be entered using the submission form and will be published with selected work. A modest submission fee is charged to offset system and web hosting costs. The authors and artists we publish receive one complimentary print copy. Burningword is a quarterly web, print, and digital publication with online issues published January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15. The cut-off date for submissions is the 10th day of the prior month for each quarter. For the October Issue, submissions opened July 1 and close September 10. Burningword Literary Journal typically asks for the right to publish an author’s work in a single print edition, an epub version of the same issue, and future retrospective editions of the journal. After publication, all rights revert to our authors.

All submissions must remove all instances of the author's name from the work itself. Author's name (or pen name), contact information, and third-person bio must be entered via the submission form. Simultaneous submissions are welcomed, but must be withdrawn immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. A modest submission fee applies.
