About the Open Call

The Artist Prize is designed to remove traditional barriers within the art world by allowing any UK-based artist aged 18 or over to apply directly, without nominations or institutional gatekeeping. The competition supports a wide range of visual art practices and is judged through a multi-stage blind review process involving approximately 80 curators and arts professionals from across the UK. Twenty shortlisted artists will participate in a major group exhibition at Firstsite from January to May 2027, with shipping costs covered and artist fees provided. An additional 200 artists will be nationally recognised through the longlist selection.

What You Can Win Winner: £30,000 cash prize and a solo exhibition at Firstsite in 2028 Shortlisted Artists (20): Group exhibition at Firstsite, shipping support up to £1,000, and a £350 artist fee Longlisted Artists (200): National recognition and inclusion in the project’s impact report Eligibility Requirements Applicants must: Be based in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) Be aged 18 or over Submit work created within the last two years (after 8 July 2024) Submit original work in one of the accepted visual art categories Artist collectives may apply with a nominated lead contact No formal qualifications, gallery representation, or professional experience are required.
