About the Open Call

VAA OpenSpaces 2025 is a worldwide, decentralised art trail built from artist-led exhibitions in surprising or everyday places, community-based creative interventions, and a digital, global map connecting every location. It offers shared visibility, storytelling, and support. The program is designed with flexibility, empowering artists to choose venues aligning with their practice and goals, from art galleries, domestic spaces, empty shops, studios, libraries, civic buildings, schools, hotels, restaurants, to online digital exhibition spaces. The VAA provides guidance on approaching potential venues, email templates, and collaborates with venue partners. Participants benefit from global exposure through an international digital map listing, QR code signage linking to artist bios, shared publicity across VAA channels and international networks, creative freedom to curate their space, professional documentation tools, and two workshops (Exhibition Essentials; Curate & Connect) available on demand.

Requirements

Applicants can be Artists worldwide, Individuals & Collectives, working in all mediums including painting, sculpture, digital, sound, installation, and performance. Artists should be interested in exhibiting at home, in public, or at local galleries or venues, and have a desire to engage directly with their communities. Participants are required to book onto workshops (optional, but encouraged), secure a space, install and de-install their work, share exhibition details with the VAA for trail inclusion, and use VAA signage and social campaign materials to promote their show. Optionally, artists can host open hours or local events. All creative rights and control remain with the artist.

How to Apply

To apply for the VAA OpenSpaces 2025, complete the Artist Application Form available on the Visual Artists Association website. Artists should upload up to 5 images of their work and one headshot. Upon acceptance, non-members will receive an invitation to join VAA membership for a subsidised fee, which includes access to OpenSpaces workshops, VAA Events, and Resources. Artists will receive a pack in August/September to assist with exhibit setup and promotion. Artists can propose their own location or seek assistance from the VAA team to secure a venue.
