About the Open Call

Organised by Balvi Municipality in cooperation with the Rothko Museum, this symposium commemorates the Latvian landscapist Valdis Bušs. Six professional artists will be selected to work in the picturesque town of Viļaka, drawing inspiration from the local natural and cultural heritage. The residency concludes with an exhibition, and created works will join the collection of the future Valdis Bušs Art Centre.

What is Offered

Catering and accommodation in Viļaka, travel costs from Rīga to Viļaka and back, workspace, basic painting materials (canvases and paints), publicity, guided tours, and participation in the symposium exhibition.

Requirements

Open to professional artists. Selected participants must provide their own travel to Rīga, bring specific personal tools such as brushes, and donate at least two artworks created during the plein air to the permanent collection.

Applicants must complete the online application form on the Rothko Museum website, providing a CV, portfolio (link or PDF), and an artist statement by the April 30, 2026 deadline.
