About the Open Call

In the International Year for Glacier Conservation, WE ARE THE FLOOD, a contemporary art platform by MUSE – Museo delle Scienze of Trento, announces its fourth annual masterclass. Led by Francesca Guerisoli, artistic director of MuDi Museo Diffuso di Lentate sul Seveso and Fondazione Pietro e Alberto Rossini of Briosco, the masterclass will take place on September 3 and 4, 2025. It is held in partnership with Castel Belasi – Contemporary Art Center for Ecological Thought, which hosts the exhibition “Come Ghiaccio. Riflessioni sullo scomparire pensando al futuro”. The program will explore themes of fragility and disappearance, protection, conflict, and spirituality in an era of dissolving certainties. MUSE emphasizes the necessity of interweaving science with humanities and contemporary art to address complex environmental issues, aiming to foster shared awareness and imagine desirable futures. Francesca Guerisoli, a contemporary art historian, has extensive experience in museum direction and curatorial projects, including the Italian Pavilion at the Malta Biennale 2024. The project "WE ARE THE FLOOD" is detailed in the book "Noi siamo il diluvio" and is curated by Stefano Cagol, who also directs Castel Belasi and has a strong focus on environmental themes in his artistic practice.

What is Offered

Participants will gain insights into contemporary art and environmental themes, engage in discussions with Francesca Guerisoli, and become part of the WE ARE THE FLOOD archive for future opportunities. A contribution towards travel and accommodation expenses is provided for participants from outside the region.

Requirements

The masterclass is open exclusively to selected individuals. Eligible applicants include artists, critics, and curators under 35 years of age, of any nationality. Individuals who have previously participated in any WE ARE THE FLOOD – MUSE initiative are not eligible. The masterclass will be conducted in Italian.

Applicants must send a motivational letter, biography, and an example of their work (artwork, text, or concept) via email to opencall@wearetheflood.eu by midnight on August 10, 2025. Each file should be named with the applicant's surname and name. By participating, applicants consent to their material being used for WE ARE THE FLOOD's communication and archives.
